Creative Corner Vlog 4 – The exposure triangle

On this episode of the Creative Corner I talk about the exposure triangle’s 3 elements: Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.

Understanding these 3 elements and what part they play in your photo will give you a properly exposed image. You can only control all 3 when you shoot in manual mode. In Auto mode the camera will set everything for you and give you no control over your camera. Auto is fine when you are outside on a nice sunny day and you have plenty of ambient light, but when you are indoors and in low light auto will not work.

Getting out of auto and into manual mode is the best thing you can do, you take total control and you set all you’re setting depending on your environment. It has taken me time to learn, and I am still learning day by day, but I want to share with you what I have learned so far and hopefully it can help at least one person.

Back to the exposure triangle, when you come to understand Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO photography gets so much easier, more enjoyable and addicting. The goal is to get a proper exposure. What is a proper exposure? It just means that your camera meter is in the center.

Your meter is the little green lines you see when you look into the viewfinder, they can be on the bottom or on the sides depending on the camera model. You need to make sure the meter is right in the middle and that will guarantee you a properly exposed image. How do you get the meter in the middle? Well that is were you need to know about aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how changing one will effect the other two. Your meter will move to the left or to the right depending on the settings you dial in.

In another episode I will talk more about the meter and the different camera modes and when you can and should use them. You don’t always need to use manual, but you need to stay away from auto.

I hope this video helps you and if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I will gladly answer it.
