During last night’s photography class, my teacher said something that truly impacted me in a positive way. A student asked about how much he should be charging people for events. I find myself in the same situation, so this question was perfect.
The teacher said that we should not under charge even if we are still students. The reason is you don’t want to devalue your work. At the same time, we should not be over charge because we are still in the learning phase. The teachers said people don’t realize how much work goes into photography or any creative field.
When it comes to photography, customers don’t understand that the price you are quoting them is not only for the time spent taking photos, it also includes the hours spent doing the photo editing. Photo editing is a must, no image no matter how good your equipment maybe is ready out of camera, you need to edit it. Editing makes a huge difference colors are more vibrant, blemishes on the face are covered and the image is sharpened. Every step done in editing is with the sole purpose of presenting the best image possible to your customer.
The same applies for quotes I give for graphic design projects, it takes work and it takes time. I work full time as a designer for a company, but I am also a freelance designer, so I am working on projects on my free time, and time to everyone is valuable! My rates on design projects are on the low side compared to other designers, but I can see firsthand why they charge what they charge. They deserve it! You as an artist are providing them with a creative service.
So if you are a creative of some kind remember do not hesitate to charge what you in your heart feels like a fair rate for the work you can provide.
If you are interested in attending the free photography workshop you can check out the events page for dates, times and locations.
Everyone has moments in life where you just feel like giving up or not wanting to move forward. When we get in that funk, it is very important to do everything possible to quickly get out of it. Why? Because life is too short and beautiful to take for granted.
I will admit I’ve had my fair share of low moments, but I will quickly block the negative by thinking of all the positive in my life. I am healthy and alive; there are many people who are sick or have some physical limitations. That gets me thinking “Alondra, you have no illness, you have all of your limbs, you have a wonderful family, a place to sleep and a career you love.”
We live in a world that give the focus and spotlight to negativity, don’t believe me, just watch the news or go on social media. We see this daily 24/7 so we think it is OK to think negative about everything and everyone. We as a culture need to change, and start promoting positive actions and by doing so we will change the way we think and act. That in turn will help change your life.
When I cross paths with someone I smile and say hello, because you never know when that free yet simple smile will help brighten up someone’s day. Smiling also makes you feel happier. Another thing I do is I listen to motivation podcasts, because sometimes you have to hear it from someone that you are valuable and are capable of achieving anything. Books are another one of my favorite sources of staying inspired and motivated. There is so much information out there to learn from! So many different topics, so I encourage you to pick up a book and read 5 minutes or a few pages per day and you will see a difference, plus you will develop a positive habit (reading). Hobby’s are another great way to get creative and they are a wonderful way to relive some stress. Go hike, spend some time surround by nature.
Those are just a few ways that help me stay inspired. You might have other forms, but just remember that the best way to stay inspired, motivated and happy is to live life to the fullest in the most positive direction you can.
We live in a world where we expect everything to happen or to be given to us instantly in this “microwave society”. We want it fast and with very little effort, but that is not how it works. Take the above snail, it has a destination it wants to get to. The snail can only move so fast and it knows it, so all the snail can do is be patient and keep moving forward inch by inch.
The best things in life are achieved by working hard in the direction of your goals/passion. Everything you are working for will be awarded at its due time, so learn to be patient. Remember its not about the destination, its about the journey getting to your destination.
Don’t worry about the successes or achievements of others around you, use that as motivation and continue to work toward your goals. Be patient, focus and get to work!
